Abstract:

The inertial impact switch used in the M429 rocket fuze was selected as a PD point-detonating element for the M514A1E1 artillery fuze to optimize the graze sensitivity and impact reliability. However, the average sensitivity of the M429 switch had to be changed from 675 g to 425 g to achieve a performance improvement over the crush switched M514A1 fuze. Field tests showed that lowering the g level increased the impact reliability and decreased the depth of penetration prior to function. These tests also showed that impact reliability can be further improved by increasing the number of switches in the fuze.
