Abstract:

The study problem is centered on identifying existing requirements for a U.S. Army helicopter pilots personal defense weapon and determining what weapon will best satisfy recognized needs. The purpose of the weapon is determined to be for defense, survival and psychological security. Physical and performance criteria identified in the study dictates that the weapon must be a pistol. An evaluation is made of various pistols to determine the best available weapon capable of fulfilling the requirement. The 9mm Colt Model 1971 is selected. A discussion and evaluation is made of ammunitions and marksmanship techniques that could improve the weapons effectiveness and hit probabilities.
