Abstract:

Since the Navy has decided to use benzotriazole BT copper passivator and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether EGME icing inhibitor as additives in JP-5 jet fuel, a study has been made to determine the effect of these additives at intended use concentrations of 5-7 ppm BT, and 0.1-0.15 vv EGME, on the flammability properties of hydrocarbon fuels. By measurements of flash point and flammability index it was observed that although BT did not appear to affect the flammability of hydrocarbon fuels at intended use concentrations, the EGME increased the flammability. At a concentration of 0.15 EGME, the flash point of JP-5 jet fuel, for example was reduced by 7F, and the flammability index was increased by 11. Author
