Abstract:

Soil-structure interaction is defined as it applies to protective structures designed to resist the forces produced by nuclear devices. A unique laboratory facility is discussed in which buried structures can be subjected to pressures simulating those produced by nuclear devices. Preliminary results and plans are presented for several research programs, i.e., fundamental studies, semicircular arches, cylinders, and similitude studies, currently being conducted at the Waterways Experiment Station.
