The state of the art of nonsteady boundary layer treatments with potential application to convective heating in guns is summarized. An analytical boundary layer analysis procedure was developed on the basis of the compressible time-dependent boundary layer momentum integral equation under the direction of the Research Directorate, Weapons Laboratory at Rock Island. Special solutions of the momentum equation were obtained by use of the classical Lagrange approximation and exponential wall shear laws. Of these special solutions, two approximate solutions were obtained to describe behavior near the breech and projectile ends of the gun barrel, respectively one exact solution was obtained for all regions in the gun barrel based on the method of characteristics.
