An experiment on the dynamic performance of UVW anemometers in the atmosphere was conducted at White Sands Missile Range. Three UVW anemometers separated by 2 meters were mounted on a horizontal bar, as was a hot-film anemometer. The center UVW anemometer was modified by increasing the moment of Inertia of the blades without altering the geometry. The simple first-order linear differential equation model for anemometer performance was shown to be inadequate when the variance transfer function based on this model was used to determine the true variance spectra from the observed variance spectra. Wind tunnel measurements were also made and show that the UVW anemometer distance constant decreases as the angle of attack of the wind increases. The field data yield distance constants for angles of attack near 90 degrees which tend to agree with the laboratory data. Author
