Abstract:

Large quantities of stroma-free hemoglobin solution were administered to normal and dehydrated baboons. There was no evidence of permanent renal damage or activation of blood coagulation. This fact supports the concept that the toxicity of hemolyzed blood is the result of stromal coagulation activity, and stroma-free hemoglobin is, therefore, non-toxic and has potential use as a plasma expander. In addition, stroma-free hemoglobin possesses highly desirable qualities because of its oxygen carrying capacity, oncotic activity and effect on blood viscosity. Author
