Abstract:

The report summarizes basic mathematics for prediction in a stochastic inputoutput system. The method adopted is through derivation of an analytical system kernel function so that the result has a more general application than the conventional numerical extrapolation method. Both linear and nonlinear systems are treated, the corresponding examples shown being 1 prediction of future wave profiles in a random sea characterized by Neumann spectrum and 2 prediction of pressure time history on a circular pile placed in a random wave field. The same method can be extended, with appropriate modification, to such critical naval problems as prediction of ship motions and pressure on a ships hull in a random sea. Author
