Comparative Performance of Roll Stabilization Systems for the Patrol Frigate.

The results of a study of the comparative performance of possible roll stabilization systems for the Patrol Frigate are presented. An initial screening process was carried out in which the following systems were considered bilge keels, free surface anti-roll tanks, u-tube anti-roll tanks, active anti-roll tanks, moving weight stabilizer, and active fins. Based on this screening process more detailed studies were carried out using bilge keels and bilge keels in combination with free surface and U-tube anti-roll tanks and active fins. These studies covered a range of system sizes and performance estimates for a range sea states, speeds and heading angles. The results are presented in terms of the size and weight of each system and the roll motions of the ship for the range of sea state, speeds and heading angles.
