Explosive experiments were performed to study the critical shear stress beyond the leading edge of shockwaves in aluminum at pressures of 300 and 650 kbar, copper in pressures of 240 and 550 kbar and lead at pressures of 460 kbar. Estimates of this quantity were performed by comparison of experimental data characterizing the decrease in pressure across the leading edge of the shockwave due to unloading with the results of calculation.
