Steady-state and dynamic performance of a gas-lubricated positive stiffness face seal was determined using advanced numerical methods based on a variable grid, finite difference, time-transient procedure. Comparisons were made between different numerical approaches used to solve the pressure distribution across the seal face and the Alternating Direction Implicit method was selected for the seal analyses. The resulting computer program was found to be faster by a factor of 15 and more accurate than the previously employed straight implicit method.
