Abstract:
The effect of direct current voltages on films of brain phospholipids and mixtures of these lipids, cholesterol and cerebroside were examined using infrared-spectral methods. It was found that the bands assigned to the vibrations of the phosphate group and the -CH2n- group in long fatty acid chains change intensity with the applied field. Two new proteolipid fractions have been isolated from the treatment of brain tissue with 4M NaCl, 4M PL and R-PL. To obtain useable films of insoluble lipid-protein complexes such as neurokeratin, trypsin-resistant-protein residue, etc., it was found that these complexes were soluble in trifluoracetic acid.
