Abstract:
To gain a better understanding of the immersional energetics of graphite degassed at various temperatures, it is important to understand the role played by surface oxides. Considerable attention has already been drawn to the acid-base character of these oxides and it is therefore necessary to know how the surface properties change as these oxides are removed. To this end the acidic nature of the surface has already been investigated it was concluded that acidic oxides, probably f-lactones, decompose to CO2 at temperatures below 600C. A relationship between base uptake and the decomposition of these oxides into CO2 was also established. This communication describes a complementary study of the basic character of the graphite used in the earlier studies. Author
