Abstract:

The Air Weather Service criterion for heavy rain four inches per 24 hours is exceeded on approximately 20 percent of autumn September- November days along the coast of South Viet Nam between 15N and 17N. The three-day running mean of area-averaged daily rainfall during autumn were computed for the 13-year period 1956-1969, less 1963. The extreme rainfall episode occurred in October in 11 of the 13 years. The duration of heavy rain periods ranged from 1 to 10 days with 3 to 5 days being most frequent. The 54 separate periods of heavy rain were stratified by synoptic regime. Heavy rains are most often associated with northeast surges in October and November and with tropical cyclones in September.
