Abstract:
In the low-energy region 100-1000 eV the measurement of photoelectric or electron-electron cross sections for atomic systems within solids is generally very difficult. Nevertheless, the transmission of monochromatic x rays or of monoenergetic no-loss electrons is almost completely determined by these cross sections in this energy region. In the work described, x-ray cross sections have been measured by both transmission and reflection electron ionization cross sections have been measured by photoelectron spectroscopy. An important characteristic of low-energy photoelectron spectroscopy is that only a few atomic layers are involved in the x-ray or electron interactions being measured. The general problem of experimentally determining ionization cross sections for the 100-1000 eV region is discussed. Author
