Abstract:
Two-dimensional stationary gravity wave solutions are given for streams with various velocity profiles such that the velocity is zero at depth. Solutions are found by using linearized equations and it is noted that unlike most flows over a rigid boundary solutions may be found for all non-zero surface velocities. New finite-amplitude solutions are derived for a stream consisting of a thin surface jet. The waves may be very steep with rounded crests and are called shear waves. Physical examples are discussed.
