Abstract:
Stress-wave theories in the literature are reviewed to determine which equations should be used to design the XM587E2 Point-Detonating PD switch to preclude premature closure when an artillery projectile is fired into a tropical rainstorm. But, because of wide variations in calculated impact pressures, the equations are not used. Experimental data are used instead to show that the projectile impact with a raindrop is almost a perfectly plastic momentum transfer hence, a PD switch design based upon perfectly elastic impact theory contains an inherent factor of safety.
