Abstract:

The objective of the research is to obtain data that can be used to predict the concentration of a passive tracer released into the wake of a submarine traveling through a stratified ocean. To develop this prediction capability, information is required on the wake shape and size. Two unique curves are obtained for estimating the horizontal width and vertical height of a wake in a stratified flow. Equations were developed for predicting submarine wake dimensions as a function of submarine velocity, initial wake size, ambient stratificaiton, and time after submarine passage. The very flat and wide wakes observed due to stratification lead to the estimate that the concentration of a passive tracer introduced into a submarine wake would remain high for long times after submarine passage.
