Performance Trails of the Eight-Inch Diameter UTIAS Implosion-Driven Hypervelocity Launchers MK II and MK III

An experimental investigation of the performance of the 8-inch diameter MK-2 and MK-3 UTIAS Implosion-Driven Hypervelocity Launchers was carried out. Many problems were encountered in the operation of this unique device such as off-centre implosions, projectile integrity, preparation of the hemispherical explosive-liner package and the erratic operation of the velocity measuring system. Detailed descriptions of the solutions were presented. An investigation of a technique of initiating the PETN liner by light sensitive explosive was carried and is presented in Appendix A. The possibility of measuring the velocity and acceleration of the projectile in the launcher barrel using a laser interferometer technique was investigated and is reported in Appendix B. Appendix C is a summary of the work carried out on the MK I launcher.
