Abstract:

The report summarises a program of experiments concerned with the electropainting of aluminum alloys and magnesium alloys. It is shown that, in the case of aluminum, anodising is a precursor to paint deposition. A system is described whereby aluminum alloys may be electropainted with a low 100C temperature curing system which contains a chromate pigment, and which imparts good salt spray resistance. The advantage of the system in penetrating crevices in complex structures and assemblies is demonstrated. Also described are methods of electropainting magnesium alloy to provide a finish with a measure of salt spray resistance and, electropainting relatively deep holes in magnesium castings with a paint layer of controllable thickness 0.5 plus or minus 0.1 mil.
