Abstract:

The deformation resistance of steels and alloys is frequently estimated by reference to the behaviour of cylindrical samples, and the data thus obtained are transferred directly to the case of metal rolling and forging, in which the conditions of deformation are essentially different, e.g. The high speed deformation associated with rolling and forging differs from the type of deformation applied in the tests. Substantial errors in deformation resistance thus accrue. The high speed effects of rolling and forging may, however, be taken into account when testing cylindrical samples by appropriately adjusting the test conditions. Methods of doing this are indicated.
