Abstract:

A detailed summary of the theory underlying a Fabry-Perot interferometer with parallel mirrors was given. Sources of error in the measurements were discussed, and several variations of interferometer design were evaluated. A photoelectronic method for recording the interference fringes is discussed. Various combinations of the interferometer with a spectrography for studying spectral lines were discussed and evaluated. Applications to the measurement of the relative intensities and splittings of the components of a spectral line were reviewed, as well as methods for determining the contour of a spectral line. The use of an interferometer as a filter for optical pumping was evaluated. Author
