The objective of the program was to assess the feasibility of rapid excavation of hard rock by means of continuous fluid jets produced by pressures in the range of 20,000 to 80,000 pounds per square inch. A total of eight rock types were selected and appropriate quantities of test specimens were procured. Cutting test data was analyzed to determine optimum settings of jet parameters within experimental ranges that result in rapid and efficient excavation of rock. Power requirements and excavation rates were estimated for a theoretical continuous jet excavation system and compared with those of a conventional system.
