Abstract:
Diagnostic techniques, including schlieren, chemiluminescent photography, pitot pressure, and total temperature probes, have been evaluated and applied to the problem of determining the flow properties in the laser cavity of a supersonic diffusion laser system. For the present schlieren system, the plenum pressure and temperature requirements are indicated. It is shown that chemiluminescent photography can provide shock pattern details in air-like gases for plenum temperatures of the order of 2000K at pressures of about 1 atm. Seeding with gases can also provide information. Pitot pressure probes make possible the detection and tracking of shock waves and can, therefore, be used to determine if exit pressure and ambient pressure are matched. The measured total temperature and pitot pressure profiles were compared with theoretical predictions based on boundary layer growth. Author
