Abstract:
The author has attempted to evaluate the present state of the art in ground surveys with particular reference to the developments in instrumentation leading towards the automation of measuring processes. The report also deals with desirable systems which may be developed during the next two decades. The inability of elevation measuring instruments to break away from their dependence on physical parameters such as gravity, temperature and pressure, and the restraining influence of atmospheric refraction on the accuracy of survey measurements in general are also dealt with and suggestions for further research are discussed.
