Abstract:
The coupled-mode equations for propagation in a medium modulated by a multiple-frequency travelling wave have been studied using many-space-scale perturbation methods. It is shown that the coupled modes propagate differently on different space scales, and that conditions for resonant coupling between modes are simply obtained by requiring no secular behavior of an asymptotic expansion for the forward and backward wave amplitudes. These principles are then illustrated by calculating the fields in a modulated half-space and in a finite slab. Author
