Abstract:
A method for determining the vibrational energy distribution of nitrogen molecules in the electronic ground state in a carbon dioxide-nitrogen-helium laser amplifier was evaluated. This method relates the relative population of the C triplet piu electronic state to the relative population of the ground state of nitrogen. The relative population of the C triplet piu electronic state was determined by measuring the relative intensities of the electron-vibrational bands of the second positive system of nitrogen. These measurements were conducted as the laser amplifier parameters, discharge current, total pressure, carbon dioxide concentration, and input power, were varied. It was found that the relative population of the C triplet piu state was insensitive to changes in the laser amplifier parameters over a range significant to its operation. Measurements of spontaneous emission from the upper laser level of carbon of carbon dioxide were conducted. Author
