Abstract:

The feasibility was demonstrated of making spherical aluminum powders for use in propellant grains by rounding commonly available random-shape aluminum powder in a fluid energy mill operating on inert gas. The powders produced meet the specifications for the Standard Missile Rocket Motor Mk 56 Mod 0 and the Sidewinder 1C propellants and can be tailored to meet other needs. The total cost is about 5 per pound less than that of the traditional method, and the facilities are safer. Author
