Abstract:

The effect of vacuum environment on the rate of crack propagation of aluminum 2014-T6 and 4130 steel was investigated under plane strain conditions. Compact tension specimens were used which were pin loaded. Center notched specimens of titanium 6Al-4V were used for crack propagation and crack growth measurements under plane stress conditions in methanol-chloride environment. It is shown that that surface layer contributes to increased rate of crack propagation. A reduction in surface layer stress brought about by vacuum environment or by prestress and surface layer removal treatment decreases the rate of crack propagation. Author
