Abstract:
Experiments on transverse B normal U ionizing shocks produced in a coaxial electromagnetic shock tube are reported. Variations of shock speed versus pre-shock magnetic field and electron density versus shock speed agree with gasdynamic ionizing shock theory for speeds up to 16 cmmicrosec Mach 125 in H2. Separation of the electron density jump and drive current layer is observed by optical densitometry. Studies of transverse reflected shocks reveal clear MGD behavior with enhanced shock speed, reduced compression ratios, and correct Brho invariants. Reflected shock widths are compared with conductivity-dominated MGD shock theory. Author
