Abstract:

The purpose of the investigations and hardware development described was to improve the reliability and performance of the coherent linear FMCW synthesizers, delivered by AVCO under previous contracts, and based on a modification of the Hewlett-Packard direct digital synthesizer, and to demonstrate the feasibility of using a new type of phase-locked VCO synthesizer for generation of the linear FMCW waveform. The latter synthesizer was also incorporated into breadboard-type hardware to comprise a single-antenna vertical-incidence ionosonde.
