Abstract:

The principal result of the project is the development of a general quantitative theory of organized systems and organized activities. The theory is based principally on communication theory and statistical thermodynamics. According to the theory, organization is the imposition of constraints in order to reduce uncertainty. Organization is measured quantitatively as negative entropy. The effects of ambiguity and noise and methods for reducing them are analyzed. A careful investigation is made of the maintenance of an organized activity by using negative entropy assimilated from the environment, and some of the conditions required for stability are found. It appears that such systems become unstable outside a certain threshold.
