Abstract:
To gain insight into materials selection and utilization criteria for gas bearings, a study was conducted of the stresses arising at the interface of layer-covered solids due to the application of normal and tangential forces. The influence of layer thickness and the relative mechanical properties of the layer and substrate were investigated. Design guidance, applicable to the broad range of coating covered surface used throughout mechanical engineering, in addition to the specific application of gas bearings, was derived from the stress analysis.
