Abstract:

In order to achieve a better understanding of the fundamental aspects of materials handling by a conveyor system, a model system is being constructed. Among the major problems to be dealt with are those which result from scaling down from the full size unit. A statistical experimental design has been set up to evaluate the actions and interactions between the variables. This should lead to a minimum amount of experimental tests. As an aid in this evaluation, simulation of vertical acceleration of the material due to belt movement has been carried out and the results are reported. Plans for two additional simulators are presented which may better reproduce particle agitation. Physical properties of three samples acquired from tunnelling projects in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and White Pine, Michigan have been run and are reported.
