Abstract:

A computer model for finite plasmas in a magnetic mirror machine is described. Ion simulation particles take the form of concentric sheets which are finite and flexible with curved contours. Radial dynamical equations are obtained by starting with the Boltzmann equation, and are coupled with suppressed degrees of freedom and finite boundaries. An auxiliary orbit model, which includes effects of finite ion Lamour radii, is used to estimate azmuthal velocity averages from the radial density profile and radial velocity averages generated by the sheet model. Simulated ion loss can take place through the radial boundary and magnetic mirrors. Author
