Abstract:
A study has been undertaken to construct and investigate cold cathode electron guns in the range of 1 to 10 Asq.cm. for eventual use as laser discharge sustainers. Measurements have been made on impedance characteristics, pulse durations, and beam uniformity. Emission mechanisms have been proposed and a relation between impedance and space charge limited flow has been established. Limitations in pulse duration have been defined. Uniformity results from photographs of beam-produced bremsstrahlung are presented. Application of such a device as a discharge sustainer is discussed. Author
