Abstract:

A direct method is compared with an iterative coupled equation approach for solving the biharmonic difference equation in a square. If there are N sup 2 unknowns, then the direct method requires C sub 1N sup 3 operations compared to C sub 2N sup 52 operations for the iterative approach with optimal relaxation, where C sub 1 and C sub 2 are constants.
