The spectral levels of 85 one-half pound blocks of TNT fired at the shallow depth of 18 inch have been determined in 26 contiguoug one-third octave bands extending from 112 Hz to 35.4 kHz. Measurements were made in sea states varying from 0 to 5. Mean levels, standard deviations and standard deviations of the mean are given. The spectra deviate markedly from the expected spectra of a shock pulse alone. A theoretical model incorporating a direct signal and a surface reflection truncated by cavitation, gives a reasonable fit to the experimental curves particularly after cavitation pressure is adjusted as a parameter to improve the match.
