Direction Finding on Whistlers and Related VLF Signals.

The direction of arrival of whistlers and related VLF signals has been measured by a new technique. This technique consists of applying an already existing theory the four-parameter method to data collected by a novel measurement procedure. Measurements of signals induced in orthogonal loop antennas and a vertical monopole located at a single site provide the necessary data. The four-parameter theory relates the loop and vertical voltages, taking into account both amplitudes and phases so that polarization error may be eliminated. The technique can be shown equal or superior in accuracy to any other VLF direction-finding scheme in current use, such as the standard crossed-loops-and-goniometer technique. Author
