The primary objective of the study was to explore the concept of isotope substitution as a tool for the precise determination of the metal-to-oxygen ratio in a metal oxide. A method was proposed that utilized substitution of either O17 or O18 for O16 in a metal oxide. Algebraic manipulation of the mass and atom balance relations between a gas phase and a solid oxide indicated an experimental path that would lead to a determination of the oxide stoichiometry. The major effort in this work therefore, has been to reduce this method to practice. Author
