Studies have been carried out on the factors influencing low temperature operation of air electrodes in metal-air batteries such as zinc-air. Using a typical Teflon-bonded platinum black electrode structure, the pertinent parameters which describe the temperature dependence of the electrochemical and transport processes have been determined in 31 KOH electrolyte. The temperature could lead to problems in low temperature operation of zinc-air cells. Comparisons of the low temperature operation of different air electrode materials have revealed a distinct dependence of the transport-limited current on electrode structure, indicating a possible approach to improved low temperature operation of air electrodes via modifications in air electrode structure.
