Abstract:
The evaluation of supplemented preservative media used for extending the shelf-life of red cells is based on a considerable amount of in vitro biochemical and in vivo post-transfusion survival data. Since the essential information for maintaining a satisfactory metabolic state in the red cell is available, it follows that it should be possible to develop acceptable preservatives and procedures for extending the viability of stored cells for a considerable period.
