The use of elevated oxygen pressures in diving, treatment of decompression sickness, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy exposes the subject to the risk of oxygen toxicity of the lungs. At present no adequate guidelines exist to assist the physician in planning an oxygen exposure which will be safe from this hazard. The development of a method of calculating an estimated rate of onset and severity of pulmonary oxygen toxicity in man for any oxygen exposure has been reported. This report explains that method and provides tables that may be used to rapidly estimate the severity of pulmonary toxicity which may be incurred by any oxygen exposure. Recommendations as to safe limits of oxygen exposures for various procedures are included. Author
