A rocket borne air density system for the 100-200 km region has been designed, calibrated and flown at White Sands Missile Range to 170 km on two Nike-Iroquois rockets. The method employed utilizes emission of a 4.5 kV dc electron beam, and observation of both 1.5 to 4.5keV x-ray breamsstrahlung and 3914A ultraviolet radiation created by interaction of the beam with the ambient atmosphere. A retarding potential analyzer is included to measure any charge build-up occurring on the rocket due to emission of the electron beam. Author
