The detection and false-alarm probabilities for maximum likelihood detection of coherent signals in noise, where the signal and noise levels are unknown, are derived and evaluated. The maximum likelihood detector is shown to be optimum in the following sense out of the class of processors that yeidls a specified false-alarm probability without knowledge of the noise level, it is uniformly most powerful for unknown positive signal level.
