Abstract:

A need exists for a short range, high accuracy marine navigation system for use in ice-covered rivers and channels. One potential solution consists of an energized cable laid on a channel bottom precisely on the desired trackline, and sensing coils and display equipment mounted on the ship to determine and indicate the direction of the cable from the ship. In particular, voltages induced in the sensing coils by the cables magnetic field are used to generate by the Lissajous technique a narrow ellipse on the face of a cathode ray tube. The tilt angle of the major axis of this ellipse is indicative of the cable location with respect to the ship. Author
