The 0-0 band of the infrared atmospheric system of molecular oxygen at 1.27 microns is a major feature of the atmospheric emission spectrum, both day and night. The emitting specis, 02 singlet Delta g, is closely associated with the ozone in the daytime and early evening. The production mechanism for the nighttime emission is not known. A rocket was launched about two hours after local sunset to observed the 02singlet Delta g emission from above. The resultant observations, while yielding only gross height resolution, did give an observations, of the o2 emission in a circle approximately 2000 km in diameter and covering approximately one hour and thirty minutes in local time and 22 degrees in latitude.
