The dynamics of electrons in semiconductors and metals in constant electric and magnetic fields was investigated. The research has concentrated on two problems the motion of electrons in a constant electric field in both a finite and infinite range, and the significance of the magnetic symmetry for a Bloch electron in a constant magnetic field. For the finite range electric field problem a number of models were solved. The numerical results in the case of a periodic potential given by a cosine are of particular interest. For this model a detailed dependence of the energy gap on the electric field strength was obtained. The case of an infinite range electric field has been approached on the basis of spectral theory. For the magnetic field an attempt has been made to reconsider the irreducible representations of the magnetic translation group in order to investigate the significance of the magnetic symmetry.
