Theoretical research on the electronic states of perfect and imperfect insulating solids was performed. Both fundamental and practical advances were made in the theory of energy bands in insulators and were applied to a number of solids, including alkali, silver, and copper halides. A number of defects were studied, in a variety of ways. In particular, aspects of electron-phonon coupling were considered molecular-orbital techniques for treating complex centers were developed.
