Abstract:
Granodiorite from the PILE DRIVER experiment was tested for dynamic unconfined compressive strength using a rapid-loading technique. The specimens were loaded to failure using a drop tower, a loading rate of 10,000,000 psi per second, and rise times of from 2.5 to 3.5 milliseconds. Several other specimens were loaded to failure statically at a loading rate of 3000 psi per minute. The granodiorite had an unconfined compressive strength approximately 27 percent greater, a modulus of elasticity approximately 28 percent greater, and a Poissons ratio approximately 50 percent less when dynamically loaded than when statically loaded.
